Stood in front of two black curtain poles, or two pan racks, wondering why one costs more than the other? You’ve found the wrought iron vs cast iron question. In a photo they look like twins. In your home, holding curtains or a heavy frying pan, they behave nothing alike.<\/p>\n

The short version: wrought iron is heated and hammered into shape by hand, so it bends under stress. Cast iron is poured into a mould, so it cracks under it. For anything handled or loaded day to day, that’s the difference that matters.<\/p>\n

How Each One Is Made<\/h2>\n

Cast iron is melted and poured into a mould. The mould sets the shape and that’s the final form, done in one go. Wrought iron is different. We heat a solid bar in the forge until it glows, then it is hammered using age of techniques to draw it out and make scrolls if needed. All done on the anvil and then put back into the fire as many times as the piece needs. It’s slower, and it’s why no two of our pieces come out quite identical.<\/p>\n

How They Look on Your Wall<\/h2>\n

Cast iron looks like what it is: moulded. The detail is crisp and repeats exactly, because every piece comes out of the same mould as the last. It has a formal, symmetrical feel that suits certain period features.<\/p>\n

Hand-forged iron looks like a person made it, because a person did. The curves are eased on the anvil rather than pressed, and the hammer marks are left visible as a feature rather than sanded away. Our Cannonball finial reads as a proper full stop at the end of a pole. No two are ever quite the same.<\/p>\n

How They Behave Once Curtains Are Hanging<\/h2>\n

This is where it stops being about looks. Lined and interlined curtains are heavier than people expect, and all that weight lands at the brackets. Every time the curtain is drawn, the pole takes a small tug, then settles back. Do that twice a day for ten years and you’ve got a lot of repeated stress at a small number of points.<\/p>\n

Wrought iron flexes a little under that and holds. Cast iron doesn’t. It’s hard and strong standing still, but brittle under a sudden or repeated knock<\/a>, so it doesn’t bend, it cracks, and once it’s cracked that’s the end of it.<\/p>\n

Weight tells a similar story. A forged pole can be slimmer for the same strength, because it doesn’t need the extra bulk cast iron relies on to make up for being brittle. Less weight on your wall plugs, and a pole that looks elegant rather than industrial above a window.<\/p>\n

How They Behave on a Pan Rack<\/h2>\n

A pan rack gets a different kind of treatment. It carries sustained weight day in, day out, and it takes the odd knock as pans go on and come off, often one-handed and in a hurry. That combination, constant load plus the occasional clout, is exactly where a brittle material comes unstuck. Cast iron’s strength standing still counts for nothing when the failure mode is a knock rather than a steady pull.<\/p>\n

It’s a nice irony that the thing most people hang on a rack is heavy cast iron cookware, which is cast iron doing precisely what it’s good at. The rack itself has a harder job, which is why ours, the ceiling-hung Hazel and Holly and the wall-mounted Hawthorn and Blackthorn, are all forged from solid iron bar rather than cast.<\/p>\n

Which Should You Choose?<\/h2>\n

Cast iron is a fine material for things that sit still, like a stove or a radiator. Keep buying cast iron pans. But for a curtain pole that gets tugged at daily, or a rack that carries weight and takes the odd knock, forged iron is the safer bet.<\/p>\n
