People often wonder whether it’s a smart idea to have iron products in the bathroom. After all, we all know that iron rusts when exposed to wet and damp environments. Here at Made By the Forge, we stock a range of products for your bathroom including towel rails, toilet roll butlers and a range of hooks and if we weren’t confident they’d be up to the job we wouldn’t offer our lifetime guarantee. So if you don’t read any further, yes, our wrought iron bathroom range will last a lifetime in your bathroom, even if it gets a bit damp every so often.
Reducing the chances of rust
To keep your wrought iron products looking their best and to reduce maintenance, all of our bathroom range of products come with a matt black paint finish. While we offer a choice of matt black paint or natural beeswax finish on our other ranges (find out about the difference between our matt black and beeswax finishes), due to the damp environment of bathrooms the paint helps to seal the metal and keep the moisture out.
Our products are maintenance-free but to keep them looking their best we recommend that every so often you give your product a quick wipe down to keep it clean. If your bathroom gets very damp, especially in the colder winter months, then a quick wipe down with a dry cloth will keep it looking brand new for decades to come.
If the paint finish gets chipped then don’t panic. We can send a small bottle of the matt black paint we use so you can touch up any areas and keep them sealed from the elements.
For further protection in wet environments, for example, if you wanted to mount our pull handles to exterior doors (which we don’t recommend), then a clear rust protector will help to increase its life span.
Cleaning light surface rust
While it’s very unlikely for rust to form on our products in your bathroom we thought we’d include some simple tips for cleaning light surface rust. These tips work well for other items such as metal garden furniture, iron fencing or iron gates.
The first tip, for very light rust, is to add some white vinegar and water to a spray bottle. Then simply spray the mixture onto the rusty areas and let it sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes simply wipe away with a damp cloth and let it dry. At this point, it’s worth looking at why the item rusted in the first place and adding an extra layer of protection.
Another option for more ingrained rust is to create a paste using baking soda and lemon juice. This can then be worked into the affected area, with the baking soda becoming a gentle abrasive, left for 10 minutes and then cleaned off with a clean cloth.
The final option for more stubborn areas is to get some aluminium foil, scrunch it into a ball and then use that to help scrape off the rust from the affected area. This method is harder on your wrought iron and will strip away any protective coating from the surrounding area so make sure to seal it up with some paint or a clear rust protector to protect it from the elements.

The environmental aspect of using wrought iron
In a world where things are designed to be consumed and then thrown away and replaced, wrought iron stands out as an extremely sustainable product. Wrought iron is exceptionally hard-wearing and will last for hundreds of years. Some of the earliest surviving wrought iron in this country dates back to the Norman era over 900 years ago, however, due to the recyclability of wrought iron much of the original, older pieces have been lost over time.
Speaking of recyclability, wrought iron can be recycled numerous times by simply melting it down to cast into a different item or heated and reworked. Your new towel rail could once have been an ornate wrought iron gate or a sturdy hinge for a church door. You can find out more about the sustainability of wrought iron as well as the extra little bits we do at Made By The Forge.
