How to Measure for a Curved Bay Window Curtain Pole

Hello, I'm Richard from Made by the Forge, and in this video, I'm going to show you very quickly how to measure up for a curved bay curtain pole.

I've been invited by Hugo to help him measure up for this lovely window here and I'm going to show you how to do it, it's very easy. So the first thing we need to do is measure the width of the window, which is the overall opening from across the bay. You’ll typically need two people for this.

Normally you want to get up and measure where you're going to mount the pole, but in this case, we'd be up on step ladders and the walls are quite even, so we are going to just take it where it's practical. Because we know the measurement here will be the same as it is up above.

It's good to have two people for this and you keep the tape measure nice and taught to get a good reading. That is three meters and 40 millimetres. Please provide the measurement in millimetres when ordering your curved bay window curtain pole. Okay, so I'm going to write that measurement down and that is the A to C measurement on the website.

The second measurement that we need is the deepest part. So you need two people to hold the string and one person to take the measurement. So Hugo, if you again assist me on this and hold the string again like you did with the tape measure across the deepest part of the bay. And I'm going to invite Hugo's wife, Rachel in to hold the other side while I take the depth of the bay. So straight across, again, exactly where you had the tape measure.

I'm going to go from the middle to the deepest part of the bay, and that is one meter 260 millimetres. So I'll write that measurement down and that is the D to B measurement on the website.

And those are the only two measurements that you need. If you've got a bay that needs returns, so the pole comes around the corner, you do this in the same way. So you take your tape measure and measure the amount of return that you want. But this is a recessed bay, so we haven't got room for returns, we've got this pillar in the way, so we are a bit restricted. So we're going to have recess brackets on each side.

And that’s it really we'll go and make the bay and come back. I hope this video has been helpful to you and thanks very much for watching.
