Measuring up

Measuring for a straight window pole is a simple job and requires just three quick steps:

  1. Firstly, where is the pole going to go? Stand back, look at the window, and check that there are no beams, light switches, or fittings in the way of a straight mount above the window. One option, if there are obstructions, is our Recess Curtain Pole and brackets. As our curtain poles are all handmade to order, we can also create a bespoke solution just for you.

Ideally, the pole should be mounted 15cm above the top of the window. If you have a low ceiling, it should be mounted halfway between the ceiling and the top of the window.
  2. Measure the width of your window. Remember to measure in centimetres.
  3. For the drawbacks (the area where the curtain hangs when drawn back), we recommend 10% of the width of the window. Just divide the window width by 10. This is added to the overall length of the pole. If you have thicker/heavier curtains, add one or two centimetres to allow for the additional thickness.

We also have a video where Richard from Made by the Forge explains how to take measurements before ordering.

Reviews

“We have ordered a number of items from you and been delighted with the hand crafted products and personal service we have received from Made by the Forge.

We found your website instructions on how to measure for curtain poles and finials really helpful and very much appreciate the personal service we received; something which is a rare commodity today. We are always keen to support independent businesses and to buy British made products.

Attached are some photos of one of the poles and finials we have bought from Made by the Forge. They are perfect for our cottage. We’ll be back for some more."

“Super excited to receive my forged curtain pole. I’ve attached a few photos. The curtains are temporary. I wanted to get the pole position before measuring for the new ones.”

“Many thanks - they look great - we'll try and replace the others, once we have the budget to do so! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to friends & family”
